The UN predicts that the current world population of seven and a half billion could grow to more than 11 billion by the end of the century and that somewhere between 80 and 90 per cent of those people will be living in cities.

One result of this increasing urbanisation has been the rise of the megacity – cities with more than ten million people.

There are now over thirty megacities, the biggest being Tokyo, with over 38 million people.
